Jackie French has written a realistic account based on fact about three school girls, one of them from New Zealand, who decide to help out with the war effort during World War I. With their parents permission they leave their wealthy British boarding school and cross the English Channel to France where they set up a canteen on a railway station on the route to the French battlefields. Here they serve coffee and sandwiches to the young men on their way to fight. Sadly, they soon realise that the trains will return carrying the wounded and dying away from the Front line and they find themselves giving not only food and drink but comfort and support. They work harder than they ever imagined and their lives are changed forever. This book is a tribute to the courage of all those women who have served in any way during war.
